Viimeiset Hitaat exhibition by Hilla Semeri & Sandra Prami

The illustrations by Hilla Semeri and ceramic sculptures by Sandra Prami stem from worlds filled with sticky chewing gum and sparkling, glittery plastic. “Viimeiset hitaat” (eng. Last dance) exhibition is on display at Luonnos, 14.6.–11.8.2024

The works of two creatives with a background in drawing celebrate girlishness and ornamental abundance. The styles and themes that once excited them as children on the sidelines of a soda disco now serve as a treasure trove for their creativity. After the turmoil of the teenage years, girlhood has found a safe haven in the arms of the artists. The exhibition opening is on Thursday, June 13, from 5 to 7 PM. Welcome!

Hilla Semeri illustrates a consumer culture familiar to her, creating a nostalgic and soft universe. Her illustrations feature daydreaming female characters and the intricate details of their daily lives, such as adorable earrings, a charming juice box, and an old flip phone.

Before studying graphic design, Semeri studied oil and watercolour painting at the Liminka School of Art. Although she uses digital tools in her commercial work, the painting background is evident in the delicate use of colour in her digital illustrations. In her artistic work, Semeri prefers slower, traditional techniques. In the exhibition’s watercolour works, digital image culture meets organic technique, and the unpredictability of watercolour painting allows for mistakes that become part of the process, guided by the joy of free creation and the exploration of materiality.

In Sandra Prami’s works, glossy, metallic, and matte treatments transform hard ceramics to look like draping fabric, soft skin, or shimmering nail polish. Since 2019, characters that previously appeared on paper have been shaped with clay. The sculptures are created slowly, requiring about a month of work. The earliest piece in the exhibition was started in 2020 and completed in 2022.

Sculptures combine experiences and fashion influences from recent decades. Objects and styles can become signs to be interpreted and read by observing abundant details. Prami’s sculptures depict delicate and imperfect moments of pressure over appearance, dependency, feelings of not fitting in, and friendship.
